It’s good to see 2008 will end with some good positive postings. I leave one last challenge to each and every reader of HSP online. Regardless of your religious beliefs I challenge everyone, Christians and traditional Hmongs to pick up the Bible or Google Gateway Bible for those who do not have a Bible. Challenge yourselves to read the book of Proverbs and when you get done tell me your thoughts as it relates to us Hmongs and yourself as an individual on this planet we call earth. Read it from a perspective of an educator and set aside your religious beliefs. See if it’s talking directly to you or about someone who you can relate. More important, see how Proverbs can help and give you wisdom.
I encourage all of us including myself to throw away our masks and be genuine to people around us. Let us be a clean cup from both the inside and outside. The scripture states that many of us are like a shiny, clean cup from the outside...but on the inside...dirty. With the new year I challenge each and everyone to see how the book of Proverbs can show us what we are doing wrong as a person and see how it can help make us all better people. I’m speaking to the mirror myself. |

| Well spoken and to the point JustMeThinking. I too see things very similar to your thoughts. It’s beginning to be more and more apparent that the Hmong people are true competitors. I guess that’s not all that bad if we are competing to better ourselves. But it’s definately not a good thing when competition in turn makes enemies or causes drama. I’m sure there are a few out there that want the Hmong future to be brighter than it was in the past. But that’s not the problem. The problem is as you have described. It’s losing grasp of the meaning of a culture, an organization, the heritage or a custom and the true care and concern for one another. I can recall my own personal experience when I first relocated to my current hometown. It was a small group of people and they did evreything together (Easter, graduations, Weddings, summer picnics, school functions, holiday events, culture shows and such). But things changed along the way. Someone, an individual or perhaps an organized group of people, came along and thought they could "control" things and have it thier way. Well, that was the downfall of it all. Today? There is no more group efforts as a whole. Sure that particular group still functions like an organization. But look at the officers (they are all part of the group that caused the downfall). My point is, there is hope. But only if those that are in control are willing to step down and/or negotiate and do what’s best for the group in it’s entirety and not for "Themselves". Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I look forward to reading more positive ideas from everyone. Until then, enjoy the Holidays. |

| Sometimes I wonder if we have lost the true meaning of what New Year is supposed to be. It’s like not understanding the true meaning of Christmas. Now it seems more about making money, making enemies, to name a few. What is the true meaning of New Year folks really people? Have we allowed money to enslaved us? I look at New Year similar to funerals. It seems like every funeral is getting larger than life. Seems like we Hmongs are always competiting against one another. It’s sad to hear funeral costing $70K because in my opinion people are trying to outdo others. Again, what is the real meaning of a funeral. Is it better to have 300 attendandts and say half or more is simply there for the social aspect. Let us be real, how many people go to a funeral to pay respect to the deceased. I can honestly say if 300 attended perhaps maybe less than 100 is there for the right cause. We have lost touch with simplicity in my opinion and the true meaning of what a New Year should be. I think US Hmongs can learn a great deal from Hmongs in less fortunate countries such as Laos, China and other places where I think they understand the real meaning of a New Year. It’s great what HSP is doing and I applaud all those who have served and donated their services. Again, it seems like our meaning of New Year now seems to be money driven. We’ve seen that flag football from Minnesota has potential to make money so now NC has incorporated flag football as one of its sport venue. Some of the comments about Hmongs not speaking Hmongs..well, we can apply this to football as well. Is it Hmong or is it money that we see in flag football. For those playing football, this has nothing to do with you. Again, just driving home the true meaning of Hmong New Year. I think we Hmongs have a long way to go in regards to achieving total unity where we can honestly say that Hmong do know how to love Hmong. Just look at our past and present history. How many Hmong clans can honestly say they are proud to see their fellow clan brother or sister be successful doctors or entrapreneurs. I think it’s true to say that some of us would wish that only our clan is successful. Look at all the past issues with Dr. Yang Dao and Gen. Vang Pao. Ever wonder why we Hmongs don’t have a country? In my opinion, I doubt all the clans could live together and get alone. Maybe this is why we’re spread all over the globe. Maybe it’s to show us that we can’t live together. just look at all the postings...it’s pretty clear to me that this in a way is our case. MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL HMONGS. Peace, joy, and love to everyone. |

268. I m a Relative of 3rd Place - 2008-12-15 21:11:55 |
I’m related to 3rd place winner. I do agree with some of the complaints however I feel some are unappropriate. I really think that the Hmong Community in NC can approve on a lot of things.
HSP did make a mistake at the Pageant that night, 1st or 3rd even is Phuab didn’t win I would have been proud of her. It takes a lot of guts to be up there and perform. Honestly I don’t think she would have taken 1st place but I also disagree with her being in 3rd. There was a couple of girl who did not make it to the final that deserved to. I am pretty sure that they know who they are.
The Discrimination part, I don’t think was the big deal about this issue. Nancy did a good job, her hand movements were amazing, if I have that flexibility in my hands I would have done a tradition Laotian dance. Although I don’t believe she should have taken 1st place I give her credits for her efforts.
I’m actually not on here to affend anyone but I just wanted to take a look at these messages. I am glad to see that many young hmoob are speaking out there thoughts. Some are good advice that HSP should consider, some maybe HSP should read think about how to prevent such negative action. My first impression of HSP was neutral, I’ve never expected them to be perfect. There was some actions that really did bother me but I know it probably won’t be take into consideration.
HSP should look over all these complaints, not just view these complaints as negative comments but also look on the positive side of it. Its really real advice from young people. To entertain the Hmoob community, especailly an event like the pageant show, HSP need to remember that they have a variety of age as audience. Honesty, Fairness, Manner, and Comfort should be viewed and take into consideration in order to run a succssful show.
I do appreciate all of 3rd place winners supporter, encouragement they gave, and victory they gain. Although many was disappointed and mad after the mistake took place. We will never know the true, changes occur all the time who really know what was the real result. I think that the whole situation was messed up and of course embrassed 3rd place winner but she took it very well, no complaint, she just kept on smiling, thats a true role model. Someone who came show positive expression through a smile no matter what type of situation she is in.
I believe that the event did impact a lot of young and old people as some of you have mentioned. Both positively and negatively, however HSP need to understand that theres alwayes going to be people who disagree with them just like theres always going to be people who agree with them.
I do advice HSP to change some to the rule on there contract and also change the type of final question was asked. I strongly suggest HSP to not ask oppinion question, that was one of my biggest concern. An oppinion can never be right or wrong, never could it be better than another, so that means the judges can’t score it, well, they shouldn’t have been able to. What I may think that was a good oppinion may not have sound good to you. The Final Question of a competition like this should be a right or wrong question, such as Hmong history, Hmong languages, Hmong cloths, or Hmong Leaders, etc. Something that nobody can argue with, something that we can all prove right and wrong.
Another Suggestion I have is revealing the score. I think that to avoid complaints and disagreement of fairness/honesty, after each round the score should be reveal, of course than it won’t be as exciting but it will keep people from accusing HSP as cheaters. The Score of each contestants should be reveal after each round to let fans, friends, and family see how each pageant is doing. The judge or score keeper should still keep up with the score though. At the end the score will be added up, announced to the audience, not just the top 3 but every contests. This will stop people from accussing HSP.
Again before I finish up here, I did not intend to affend anyone, just want to let HSP know my thoughts and advise them a little.

| Wow... so much compassions from my Hmong community in the Carolinas. It is okay to complain and let the leaders know that people are not happy with the processes or want changes. However, going about how to make the changes or what language to use is something we all need to refrain from. I am sure that many of the writers on these guestbook are college graduates and pretending to be non-college graduates. It is okay if you want to pretend that you are not educated but if you do so, how much or the worth of your complaint will be for the leaders of HSP? Please consider write careful thoughts and suggestions to HSP leaders so that changes can be made. No organization is perfect. However, everyone who complain must provide suggestions and ideas to make it a better organization. Better, provide the resources and times to HSP to make it a great organization. Every flower has a blooming day... is your flower ready to bloom? Meaning.. are you ready to step forth and help make HSP a great organization instead of just complaining? Just a thought... walk the talks not just bull the talks!!! |

Wow!! So much drama in such a small organization. People, let’s face the facts and resolve the problem. It doesn’t matter if you are with or against HSP. No matter what we do or say, we are still Hmong. This type of behavior is unacceptable. Fong (Webmaster) please try and block off profanity from the guestbook. I realize I’m no longer on the HSP Board, but I care enough to save our Hmong face. So I am kindly asking that everyone try and resolve these matters in a more professional matter. As stated in an early reply, if you want to make a change for the better, or correct things that you see wrong. Please attend those meetings and voice your opinion(s). IMO we all need to be thankful for what little we have. Yes the parking is muddy and the facility is in need of bigger and better things. But without funds, it’s not possible. In any situation, nothing gets resolved or gets better over time. It takes lots of money and effort to get better and to improve. Let’s set aside the wrongs for the time being and be thankful for what we have and not worry about what we want. It’s the season to be thankful and quit honestly, though I wasn’t there at the New Year this year due to prior commitments, I am thankful that there was a handful of people who did make it happen. There were lots of people who did attend. Yes there were mistakes and dissapointments. But that’s what happens in the real world. (Not that it matters) I am encouraging anyone compitant that cares, regardless or age, to take the innitiative and help better HSP. Bare in mind it is a public non-profit organization operated by those who are willing to do it for nothing more than pride. Fong, you may want to print these comments, suggestions, arguments or whatever you want to call them and bring it up to the Boards attention the next time they have a meeting. Well, I hope everyone will find peace over the Holidays and Happy New Year to all.
